The Advocacy Service is an information, referral, and support service. Advisors provide assistance on a range of issues. These include: academic rights and assessment, grievances with the University, student progress hearings, discipline hearings and general welfare issues. All enquiries are confidential. Arts Lab

The Arts Lab is available for drawing, painting and craft activities. A technician is on hand to assist students. Consult the website for semester opening hours and member workshops. The Arts Lab is located in the east stairwell, third floor, Union House.

Arts Department

An accessible and creative channel for all students who are artistically inclined. This student representatives’ department aims to bring together students from a broad range of interests in the arts with Member’s Arts Grants; Above Water, a creative writing competition; and Mudfest, a week long arts festival. Building attendants (Union House)

Responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and security of Union House. Help them do their job by reporting any accidents, spillage or security risks in Union House to the Information Centre, ground floor, Union House.

Camping equipment

Chaplaincy

The chaplains provide ministry to the whole university. Some of the activities and aims of chaplaincy are to: support student groups, build a sense of community on campus, offer worship services and prayer, provide confidential personal counselling and spiritual direction. All Chaplains have agreed to work within a context of respect for all religions and expressions of faith. The team of chaplains consists of: a Jewish chaplain; Christian chaplains from the Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran and Uniting church traditions; the Islamic Adviser position is presently vacant.

The Chaplaincy is located in two places: third floor, west wing Union House (enter via Food Hall, ground floor); and with Wellbeing Services: level 1/138 Cardigan St. There is usually at least one chaplain present during weekdays (from 10m to 4pm) however appointments are recommended. 8344 7566

Clubs and Societies

Clubs affiliated with the Student Union range from the cultural, religious, political, musical to the recreational. So join a club or two, meet other students and have fun doing the things that you enjoy. If you can’t find the club that suits you, start your own! The Student Union has formed a partnership with The Wisdom Teeth Professionals dental service to offer students discounted dental care.

Discounts on campus

Food, drink, stationery, art supplies, clothing. Students can show their cards at selected outlets on campus for discounts on a wide variety of products and the all important student staple, coffee.

Discount cinema tickets

Hoyts and Village tickets can be pre-purchased at a significant discount at The Uni Store, The Underground, basement, Union House.

Employment

The Employment Service provides students with the opportunity to work for the Student Union. A professional visual art space for showcasing student artwork from the University of Melbourne and other institutions. A dynamic program of exhibitions runs during semester, changing every two weeks. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 11am to 5pm. Exhibitions openings every second Wednesday 5—7pm.

Justice of the Peace

The Justice of the Peace service is available by appointment Monday to Friday 12.30–2.20pm. Appointments can be made in person at the Information Centre, Ground floor, Union House, or by phone on 8344 5415. Maximum of 10 pages, signed at anyone appointment, copies can only be certified if accompanied by their original. Original documents that are double sided (i.e. Academic transcripts, etc.), need to be also presented with a double sided copy in order to be certified. Identification cards must have both sides presented on the same sheet of paper (e.g. drivers licences, student cards).

Loans

The Information Centre, in Union House, can give small cash loans (up to $5) for emergencies, for example if you lose your wallet or accidentally leave it at home. These short-term loans must be repaid within a week. If you require a larger loan please contact Student Financial Aid 8344 6550.

Lockers

Need a safe place to leave books or other personal belongings on campus? You can hire a locker for $90 at the Student Union Information Centre, ground floor Union House. Drop by the Information Centre from 13 February 2012 to sign up, or call us on 8344 6966 for more information.

The Melbourne University Overseas Students’ Service is the international arm of the Student Union. The Melbourne University Overseas Students’ Service organises welfare, recreational and cultural activities and lobbies on issues that affect overseas students while at University.

The Melbourne University Overseas Students’ Service Lounge is located on the second floor of Union House. The lounge offers tea and coffee, international newspapers and magazines in a relaxing atmosphere. The MUOSS office is also located in
the lounge.

Lounge

The Lounge is a space on the ground floor of Union House. Relax and recharge between lectures, with comfy seating, WiFi access, microwaves, games, study areas and a huge plasma TV. This Melbourne Uni Student Arts Festival runs every two years as a showcase of the creative spirit, artistic energy and cultural expression of students across all campuses. Mudfest12 will take place in second semester 2011.

Noticeboards

The Student Union provides noticeboards in Union House where students can advertise goods and services, accommodation, furniture, lifts to and from University (and interstate), textbooks and cars. All notices must be stamped and dated by the Student Union Information Centre staff, otherwise they will be removed. Union House

Union House is located in the centre of the Parkville campus and provides a wealth of cultural and support services to students as well as a place to relax, be entertained and eat. It is the focal point of Student Union activities and the heart of University life. Semester Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7.30am to 9.30pm; Saturday and Sunday 11.30am to 5.30pm. Union House Theatre

More than 30 student theatre groups are affiliated with Union House Theatre. Auditions for shows are advertised outside the office on the first floor of Union House and on the Union House Theatre blog. Experienced Union House Theatre staff can assist students in the artistic, administrative and technical areas of theatre production on campus. Union House Theatre, first floor, Union House, is open 9.30am to 5pm Monday – Friday.

Union House Theatre manages the use of several theatres:

  • Guild Theatre, first floor, Union House;
  • Union Theatre, ground floor, Union House;
  • Des Connor Room, second floor, Union House (enter through the white doors on the ground level, outside east wall of Union House, opposite the Union Lawn).

Run annually, Melbourne University Student Union VCE Summer School offers disadvantaged secondary students from across the state a chance to get a head start with their VCE study. The program relies on Uni students volunteering their time to tutor and organise activities for two weeks during the January period.

Wom*n’s Room

The Women’s Room is on the first floor of Union House, opposite the Food Co-op. The Student Union provides these rooms in recognition that women need their own space to feel safe, confident and unthreatened. They are places where women can relax, have a cup of tea, read, meet other women, hold meetings or generally get together. The women’s room is open to all women.
