As student unions function through cooperation and mutual trust, it is critical that there is transparency and accountability. New online features progress us further in opening up the Union, promoting bottom-up engagement. Here’s a run-down:
UMSU e-newsletter
A fortnightly e-newsletter containing key updates on student representation, including recent news and events from each UMSU department, report-backs from Students’ Council proceedings, information about activist campaigns & policy working groups, and notices/updates about other representative activity & opportunities. Please sign-up at the UMSU Melbourne Commons site (open to all students)
wiki – Melbourne Commons
A ‘wiki’ (website editable by users from any browser) has been built, facilitating direct involvement in UMSU and general Melbourne Uni activity. The commons wiki will also serve as a repository for information about UMSU and University councils and committees, with reports from representatives, relevant extracts from meeting documents, etc. melbournecommons.info
Updates & Messaging: twitter
UMSU now has 2 twitter accounts: umsu and umsu_action. The umsu account will be updated reasonably regularly with information about UMSU activity, university activity, higher education developments, etc. The updates can be directed to your RSS feed reader or viewed at twitter.com.
The umsu_action account will be used only for urgent messages of critical importance. You are encouraged to set-up a twitter account (twitter.com ) to receive messages from umsu_action by sms. You can shut text messages from Twitter off at any time by replying with “off” (and back on by sending “on”).
Contact the UMSU Secretary for further details.
