The Student Representative Network consists of students appointed to various decision-making bodies of the University which determine, among other things, what kinds of courses are offered, which educational innovations will be adopted and conduct quality assurance. There are positions available on the Committees of University Council, Academic Board, the Senior Executive, various Advisory Groups and more.
You don’t have to be an expert on or be majoring in Education or University Politics to apply. The University is a vast and complex organisation and student representatives from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines are needed to ensure that we are able to get the best deal for students in every area. To see University Organisational Charts or for more information about the governance of the University, visit the Secretary’s Department website.
Being a student representative gives you the opportunity to have direct input into the University and the chance to learn and develop valuable professional skills. These include communication skills, time management and leadership. Training will also be provided that will let you know what to expect and how to handle the various situations you will encounter. A typical University Committee will have a two-hour meeting once a month.
How to Apply
To apply simply fill in the application form here and return it to the Secretary, First Floor Union House by 5pm on Friday 30th October (the last day of teaching in Semester 2). Alternatively, you can send an email to secretary[at]union.unimelb.edu.au with answers to all the questions on the form.
Membership of the Student Union may be considered as an indicator of interest and commitment to student affairs at the University.
After applications have been processed you will be notified of the outcome. If you are offered an appointment and accept it you will be invited to attend a training session and can begin your role as a member of the Student Representative Network.
