Uber-slacker Jaye has convinced herself that she is happy with her underachieving lifestyle. After studying philosophy at uni, she now lives in a trailer and works in a cheesy souvenir shop in Niagra Falls. As her best friend informs her, “Disappointing your family is like an extreme sport for you.” She cruises along in her state of disaffected Gen-Y-ness until one day, a wax lion figurine starts talking to her. Telling her to do things, in fact. Not in a “kill ‘em, kill ‘em all” kind of way, but the messages are weird enough that Jaye tries to ignore them. Then other toy animals start talking, and they don’t shut up until Jaye does what they say. Every time she does follow orders, she ends up helping people out in their lives. Jaye is not impressed by her new Joan-of-Arc-meets-Boy-Scout role, but ignoring the toys soon proves to be more trouble than it’s worth. This is an addictive, “I’ll just watch one more episode” series from the producer of Firefly – full of good writing, clever storylines and laconically wisecracking characters (for Jaye, think Juno in 10 years). A perfect form of light distraction for when you really should be doing something else.
