by Henry James
Despite occasionally dabbling in “the classics”, I’ve never read Henry James. He always looked a bit “hard”, if you know what I mean. Anyway, there was a movie on a few weeks ago with Uma Thurman and Nick Nolte and, no, I can’t remember the name of it, based on one of his books, and it was ok (it’s The Golden Bowl – ed.) So I picked a short (about 170 pages) Henry James book just to see. It’s one of those period drawing room dramas/romances with lots of rich, pretty people, clever dialogue and ulterior motives. And it was easy to read! Call me shallow, but that was exactly what I was looking for. The story centres on young Catherine, who is of marriageable age. She is courted by Morris, a Bright Young Thing, but alas – without any fortune of his own. This makes Catherine’s wealthy doctor father suspicious and so begins a tug of war between Catherine, her Father, Morris and Catherine’s widowed but over-romantic Aunt. Anyway, it’s a good read and I might do another, perhaps more famous, James book sometime. Like “Portrait Of A Lady” or “What Maisie Knew” or something. (Arllo)
