Ever been so struck by a story that lush music bursts from the page into your head? A Japanese folk tale of magic, love and loss is the inspiration for The Decemberists’ latest album The Crane Wife. The result is a beautiful, striking collection of ballads that weave tales of strange journeys, murder and star-crossed love. Although some of the subject matter is quite dark the effect is more melancholy than sombre. Many of the tracks are toe–tapping, sing-along numbers such as Sons & Daughters, The Perfect Crime and O Valencia! This album is a gorgeous treasure, whether you engross yourself in the narrative threads or just tune into the pop-folk jiggy sounds (the beer drinking, knees-up type, not the Will Smith type).
