Borrowers’ Rules

How many items can I borrow and for how long?

Members may borrow 6 items in total and place holds on up to 6 items at a time. The loan period for books is 3 weeks and 1 week for videos, DVDs and audio tapes. Periodicals may only be borrowed for one hour. Computer games are available for 1 hour but must be used within the Library on the Library’s computers.

The Rowden White is part of the University’s Student Laptop Loans scheme. Any currently enrolled University of Melbourne student may borrow a laptop to use within the Rowden White Library for 3 hours. You must produce your current Student Card and it must be valid. Items from the Music and Reference Collections are not available for loan.

Returning Borrowed Items

All items taken out of the Rowden White Library must be returned to the Library by the due date via the return chutes. As a borrower it is your responsibility to note the date that borrowed items are due for return. The due date is stamped on the date slip at the time of checkout.

There are two return chutes: one is located to the right of the loans desk; and the after-hours chute is to the left of the main entry/exit doors. Items lent for use within the Library, such as laptops or computer games, must be returned to a staff member at the counter.

Please do not return Rowden White Library items to other libraries of the University of Melbourne. The Rowden White Library is a service of the MU Student Union Ltd. and has no administrative relationship with other university libraries. The return of Rowden White Library items remains the sole responsibility of the borrower at all times.

You can check your current borrowing record on the library’s online catalogue.

Re-borrowing items

You may re-borrow items in person at the Loans Desk, online, or by phone, on (03) 8344 6967. In either case, please have your valid student/staff card with you so that we may use the barcode to access your borrowing record. If you do not have your card with you, we can NOT process the renewal request.

Items may only be renewed twice. Items that are a few days overdue will still be renewed. However, if another patron has placed a hold on any item you have borrowed, we will be unable to renew that item, and you will need to return it to the library by the due date. Items that have incurred lost charges cannot be renewed under any circumstances.

Online renewals must be done BEFORE the due date. If you find that you are unable to renew online please come and see us at the Loans Desk or talk to us on the phone.

Loans are not transferable

No one else can use your card to borrow on your behalf, and you cannot give items you have borrowed to anyone else to use. If this occurs the loan will be withdrawn and your Student Union membership may be temporarily suspended.

Overdue items and fines

Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy only. Failure to receive a reminder notice does not excuse you from the responsibility of returning items on or before the due date, so please ensure we have your correct postal and email address. You cannot borrow until all overdue items are returned or replacement charges paid.

If you fail to respond to an invoice issued on behalf of the library, the matter will be passed onto a debt collection agency, and you will be responsible for both the library charges and the agency fee. The starting fee for recovery action begins at about $100, plus the replacement cost of the items borrowed.

If the items are returned or paid for before the matter is passed on to the debt collection agency, all fees and charges will be waived, and borrowing rights restored.

If you have any queries please call the library on (03) 8344 6967 or email the Library Coordinator.
