The National Tertiary Education Union, the union that covers university staff including lecturers, tutors and admin staff, will be striking this Thursday 21 May at Melbourne University, RMIT, Swinburne, Monash, and Deakin.

The strike follows University management’s suspension of collective bargaining negotiations. Negotiations had already dragged out for almost a year, with no agreement from the University on claims for pay rises and the restoration of pre-Howard era rights and conditions. In response, NTEU members and supporters will be holding picket lines from 7am onwards at all major entrances to campus. The aim is to shut down the campus, to prevent business as usual, and force the university to listen to their demands.

Matt McGowan, State Secretary of the NTEU has called on students to support the strike, join the picket line and not go to class or the libraries. It is vital that students support their staff, this is about our education too. We all benefit from smaller class sizes, less overworked and stress staff, and more accessible tutors and lecturers who have the time to help students who need assistance. So, this Thursday, all students should support their staff and NOT COME ON TO CAMPUS.
