Welcome messages
President Suyan Ng
I’m Suyan Ng and I am a third year Bachelor of Commerce Student, majoring in Accounting and Finance.
MUOSS is the main representative body for all international students at Melbourne University, and as President, I act as a medium through which issues faced by international students can be raised to university-level committees. I also liaise with external parties on behalf of MUOSS; these include National Union of Students, Asialink, and when the need arises, the media. As chair of executive and central commitee meetings, my role is to provide the guidance and support needed by the committee members to carry out their various roles and work well together as a whole.
My journey with MUOSS has been long but fulfilling – I joined first as a volunteer through the OSA Programme, then as Cultural and Social Director and now finally as President. It has been a great honour and pleasure to not just be part of something bigger than just myself, but to also be placed in a position where, with the combined effort of 33 other committee members, we can serve the international student community by helping them find a home away from home and thereby truly make a difference. I hope that we have and will continue to play our role in ensuring that students, through active participation in activities and cultural interaction, enjoy a fun, and all-rounded university experience.
Vice-President (Activities) Jacintha Soo Ho
Hi there! My full name is a bit of a mouthful – Jacintha Soo Ho Pau Lin – and I hold the position of Activities Vice-President in MUOSS. I decided to become part of the team to gain more experience in working in an organisation as well as bringing benefits to all international students.
I want people to know what MUOSS is and being able to work in such a position gives me the ability to bring out new events as well as to change current ones that inject new ideas into the committee. I also watch over publicity and ensure that it collaborates well with our events, and with my past knowledge of working in MUOSS I hope to help mentor and teach the new committee in the many different aspects involved in working in this organisation.
Vice-President (Education and Welfare) Sebrina Teoh
Hello! I’m Sebrina Teoh and I’m studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Marketing and Management.
I cherish my family friends and enjoy living life to the fullest! I have a passion for fashion, art and music and confess to being terribly sentimental. I started my journey in MUOSS as an Activities Officer. Being an AO, I was given the opportunity to work with amazing, talented and capable office bearers that taught me how to handle tasks and other difficulties that I can never learn from a textbook. Thus, I decided to re-run as the Vice-President of MUOSS this time around.
As the Vice-President (Education and Welfare), I’m in charge of handling the wellbeing of international students. Studying abroad alone can sometimes be daunting as we don’t know anything about the country nor do we know who to tell or get help from. Facing those issues during my high school years have made me realise how important it is to have a strong body to support international students. I hope that by being an EVP I can help these students overcome their difficulties and also having a say in their opinions.
I also enjoy being involved in MUOSS as it makes me feel part of an extended family. Being there to care for one another is mostly what MUOSS is all about! If you want to contact any one of us to find out more, please don’t hesitate to do so.
Secretary Kristina Ong
Hi, I’m Kristina Ong, and I am currently completing my third year of a double degree in Commerce and Law. I previously served as sub-editor in MUOSS, and have been elected as Secretary for the term 2009/2010.
My main responsibilities as Secretary involve upholding the MUOSS Constitution, and overseeing both Publicity and Editorial portfolios. Overall, it is the strong vision of providing representation and care for international students that motivates me in my duties as Secretary.
It is my pleasure to work with the motivated and capable individuals in our Central Committee to achieving this goal to the best of our ability.
Editor Emily French
Hi there! I’m Emily French and I currently hold the position of MUOSS Editor. My credentials for this position are pretty extensive; I’m an aspiring journalist, I’m enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts, I’m a grammar nitpicker and best of all, I’m from England! Shakespeare came from there, so I must know my stuff.
My main responsibilities include overseeing MUOSS publications such as The Link (look for our next publication at the beginning of Semester 1, 2010!) but to be perfectly honest, being part of MUOSS means being prepared to contribute to every activity, festival and celebratory event that we have going! It’s a great team that endeavours to provide students with many opportunities to enjoy the multicultural society that we live in.
My main method of communicating with the student community is the ACCENT e-Newsletter, so if you are not currently subscribed, SIGN UP today! Additionally, if you are interested in contributing to The Link, I would love to hear from you. You are free to contact me via e-mail at e.french@union.unimelb.edu.au or drop into the MUOSS Lounge (located on the Second floor of Union House) to speak to me there. As the only Caucasian in MUOSS, it has to be said that I’m pretty easy to recognise.
Publicity Director Cashreyn Mohd.Azlan
My name is Cashreyn Mohd. Azlan, and I’m an Arts student. I’m the Publicity Director for MUOSS and joined because I love meeting and working with exciting people every day!
Cultural & Social Director Yee Hooi Tee
Hi! I’m Yee Hooi, and I’m currently in my first year, majoring in Accounting and Finance. As the Cultural and Social Director of MUOSS, I organise events and make sure they run smoothly. Some would say my job mainly involves fostering an appreciation for culturally diverse food – you only need to come to Semester 1’s Night Market and Semester 2’s Festival of Nations to see why!
I’m energetic, enthusiastic and passionate about satisfying the international student community through MUOSS. If you’d ever like to chat to me with any ideas or feedback you might have, you’d be very welcome!
Service & Welfare Director Fred Lee
I’m Fred Lee and I’m studying a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Economics and finance. I was elected as the Service and Welfare Director, a job that involves assisting the Education and Welfare Vice-President and coordinating with our Education and Welfare Officers to advocate the rights of international students.
By organising events that invite both international and local students, our team is aiming to improve the equitable welfare, quality of education, and integration amongst students. The reason I joining MUOSS is simple; I was influenced by the enthusiasm of the awesome previous office bearers during my time as an OSA. Now, I’m glad to have the chance to serve the international students and I’m sure it will be enjoyable and meaningful in the coming year.
OSA Co-ordinator: Richard Lu
I am Richard, a first year student doing the Bachelor of Biomedicine. I was actually born in China, migrated to Singapore when I was four and have been living there ever since.
I first got involved in MUOSS as an Overseas Student Ambassador, and my experiences helped me decide that serving the international student community in the university is what I wanted to do. My job is to oversee and run the Overseas Student Ambassador (OSA) Program, which is a volunteer program to allow university students like you to get involved in MUOSS, and serve as the link between the OSAs and the committee. If you have any queries, just look for me in the MUOSS Lounge as I am usually always there during lunch time. (Just an Editor’s note – Richard is actually famed for his presence in the MUOSS lounge. He never leaves.)
Activities Officer: Beatrice Syin Yi Koh
I’m Beatrice Koh and am in my first year of the Bachelor of Commerce degree with plans to major in Accounting and Finance. I am one of the Activities officers of the Melbourne University Overseas Students Services and have organised and facilitated activities throughout the year.
Since these activities are fun, beneficial and aid the learning experience of students by endowing them with a multi-racial perspective of occurrences, I had to have a hand in planning them! Besides organising bonding activities, being part of MUOSS has honed my leadership skills, expanded my social network and made my life in university a rewarding experience.
Activities Officer: Charlene Suat Ching Ng
HELLO! My name is Charlene and as the activities officer of MUOSS, I assist in the planning and execution of all social activities. Since I enjoyed taking part in MUOSS events, I figured it’d be awesome to have a hand in planning! It takes a lot of time and devotion (and energy) to plan events but the it’s always worth it when you feel you’ve done a good job and your hard work has been appreciated by the student community! If you want to thank me for my part in Orientation and Festival of Nations, you can always look me up.
Activities Officer: Jason Teoh
I’m Jason Teoh, a Science student, and I hold the position in MUOSS of Activity Officer. Being an international student myself, I want to aid other international students who have just moved away from home. Also, being a part of MUOSS will prove to be a fantastic experience that I’ll always remember from my university life.
Education Officer: Jia Jiun Liew
My name is Jia Jiun Liew, and I’m a first-year Commerce student. I’m also the Education Officer – I organise activities with educational themes. I joined MUOSS to gain new experiences, meet new people, and of course to have fun!
Welfare Officer: Adam Shi
My name is Adam Shi, and I’m studying Accounting and Finance. I’m the Welfare Officer for MUOSS, and your welfare is what I am most concerned about. The reason why I signed up for MUOSS? It’s awesome.
Liaison Officer: Suyin Chong
My name is Suyin Chong, studying Bachelor of Commerce degree (3rd year), majoring in accounting and finance.
The liaison team is great – we support MUOSS events financially, effectively and efficiently! Working hand-in-hand with my dear liaison partners, Kitty and Jun Shen, we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into getting sponsorships in the form of money or products from kind-hearted souls and companies.
Strategic planning along with action is essential for success. There are good times and bad times. It is a challenging yet an exciting task. It can be depressing to receive rejections, but the sense of accomplishment is really great when you clinch the deal. Trust me!
We share a common mission in delivering the best experience for the international students. That’s the reason why I joined MUOSS. It will be definitely an enriching and refreshing experience for me, a number-crunching student!
Sub- Editor: Hannah Ooi
Hi! My name is Hannah, and I’m a second year Arts student majoring in Art History. As sub-editor, my main job is working for the publication of The Link, the zone for all international students. Look out for the new publication due at the beginning of Semester 1 2010! Being in MUOSS is a great way to give back to the community that I’ve been a part of since coming to Melbourne, and is guaranteed to be a great learning experience that I hope you’ll be a part of. You’re guaranteed to enjoy it as much I do!
Co-opted Publicity Officer: Kevin Chua
G’day mate! Je m’appelle Kevin Chua. I’m a second year Media and Communications student in the University of Melbourne . I’m from Brunei Darussalam, a teeny tiny country which only one out of twenty Aussies actually know where it is. Anyway, my relationship with MUOSS goes way back. I started out as an Overseas Student Ambassador (OSA) and it was love at first sight. Ahem. I joined the committee as the Co-opted Publicity Officer and will be at your service for the next year. Well, when I say that, I actually mean I’ll be there shoving flyers on your face and inappropriately invading your personal space. Pardonnez-moi!
Co-opted Activities Officer: Christina Endi
Hi! I’m Christina Endi, a first year commerce student from Indonesia and I’m the new co-opted Activities Officer. I joined MUOSS mainly to gain experience and join in the fun! I like organising activities and making new friends. MUOSS caters to the needs of the international students and it is enriching to know that I can contribute to my friends and the general student body.
Co-opted Activities Officer: James Hutauruk
I’m a first year commerce student who is proud to be in the A team (having been surprisingly co-opted as an Activities Officer). I believe the most exciting thing I do at university is be part of MUOSS! My job includes keeping Yee Hooi happy alongside impressing my boss Jacintha. I look forward to seeing all the unique and amazing encounters that MUOSS will have and hope that anyone who is reading this right now feels the same way! If you’d like to contact me then you don’t hesitate to do so as, frankly, bumping into me should be considered the experience of a lifetime for any student.
Co-opted Welfare Officer: Christy Chung
Hi, I’m Christy from Hong Kong and I’m a second year Commerce student, majoring in Accounting and Finance. I am also MUOSS’ co-opted Welfare Officer. My job is to organize activities concerning the welfare of international students, such as Bookfest and our Buddy Program, to name a few. The main reason why I joined MUOSS was because I wanted to experience different challenges in my time here in university. In MUOSS, by trying various new things and working with people from different backgrounds, I know I will have an enjoyable and memorable second year that is not just about study!
