The Education and Welfare department is the representative branch of the Melbourne University Overseas Students Service. Our aim is to educate international students about their rights with regards to the University and Australia in general, to ensure that students are getting quality education and also to educate international students in dealing with cultural diversity and differences. We also aim to increase the understanding of issues that concern the general well being of international students.

Over recent years we have been actively pursuing the following campaigns:

  • “Bookfest” that provides students an alternative to buy cheaper second-hand textbooks
  • MUOSS Buddy Program” that helps new international students to make friends at university and interact with local students by facilitating mentoring program.
  • “We are Different but the Same(DS)” Board that addresses equity and diversity issues around the university

The Education and Welfare department has also been active in university level meetings. The department has been a strong voice in various committees, expressing the thoughts and situations of international students in such meetings.

In this coming year, the department has started a few new initiatives that focus on facilitating international students into a global environment and smoothen their transition process in Melbourne. These new initiatives include “MUOSS Cup 2009 – futsal and basketball competition”, and “We are Different but the Same(DS)” campaign”. Also, the department still continues to strive to represent international students in the broader arena, in various university committees meeting.
