When you think about artWhen you think about art

When You Think About Art examines changing ideas about art over three decades. The exhibition features archival slides, video, publications, catalogues, posters and images from the George Paton Gallery Archive at the University of Melbourne. Artists featured will include Warren Burt, Domenico de Clario, Bonita Ely, Peter Kennedy and John Hughes, Lyndal Jones, Jill Orr, Richard Tipping, Peter Tyndall and many more.

The title of the exhibition (and book) is taken from the first of the Ewing Gallery's famous Ideas Shows. `The Letter Show,' July 1974, asked artists and others to respond to the question `When you think about art, what do you think?' Responses included a printout of Stelarc's brainwaves as he meditated on this question in a laboratory in Japan.

Thirty-four years later the same question has been put to over 300 artists and writers, most of whom have been involved with the gallery over the years. Their replies will be exhibited, along with the gallery's archival material, in an exhibition celebrating a detailed history of the Ewing and George Paton Gallery.
