Review: Parklife 2010
Thursday, October 28 2010
Parklife is supposed to be an event that heralds in the summer, providing sunshine, warmth and tunes from the electronic and indie musicians “who completely define the moment in music.” Or so the festival organisers modestly claim on their website. It moved to Sidney Myer Music Bowl this year after a few years at Birrarung Marr. Given the Bowl’s surrounds, this better suits festival’s name—Birrarung Marr was more of a grassy knoll or a green walkway than a park. This year’s line-up wasn’t quite as impressive as last year, but still packed a punch, with Groove Armada, Missy Elliot and The Dandy Warhols topping the bill, backed up by many well and lesser known acts.
Softcore Prawn: Review
Sunday, September 5 2010
I have to admit that Softcore Prawn was my first Law Revue because for many years of uni I thought it had something to do with, well, law. Gross.
Cowboys in Controversy: Review
Sunday, September 5 2010
First-time filmmaker Amit Virmani is riding the bull of controversy let loose by his documentary, Cowboys in Paradise. The film explores the possibility that the “Kuta Cowboys”—the local beach-boys of Kuta, Bali—are not just prostitutes for western female tourists, but men who live by a different definition of love altogether. The film, which explores the lives of Kuta Cowboys and sex tourism on the beaches of Bali, has faced fierce resistance from Indonesians since Amit uploaded the trailer to YouTube.
Let the Sun Shine: Review
Sunday, September 5 2010
If you were born of Boomers, it’s fair to assume your parents are either whinging nanny-state leftists, or bloated, provincial conservatives. If they fit neither category, they’re probably not very entertaining.
The Boat People in Your Lunchbox: Review
Sunday, September 5 2010
There’s nothing quite like brilliant male voices harmonising for lunch. Brisbane bred indie pop quartet The Boat People at 1000 Pound Bend were much better than a packed sandwich.
How To Make Trouble And Influence People
Tuesday, August 17 2010
So you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this one made me laugh out loud. How To Make Trouble And Influence People: Pranks, Hoaxes, Graffiti & Political Mischief-Making has a cover photo of police forcibly removing a protester in a huge sugar glider suit from the Victorian Treasury Office. The offending furry friend had dumped a pile of woodchips in the office as a protest against logging the water-catchment.

So you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but this one made me laugh out loud. How To Make Trouble And Influence People: Pranks, Hoaxes, Graffiti & Political Mischief-Making by Iain McIntyre, has a cover photo of police forcibly removing a protester in a huge sugar glider suit from the Victorian Treasury Office. The offending furry friend had dumped a pile of woodchips in the office as a protest against logging the water-catchment.
Transformers: War For Cybertron [Game, 2010]
Tuesday, August 17 2010
I’m going to go ahead and say this right off the bat: Transformers: War For Cybertron is probably the best Transformers game ever made.
