Eyeball is a black and white twice-weekly news sheet produced by MU Student Union Ltd. It lists the activities of all clubs and societies on campus, profiles clubs, student activities, student promotions, reviews of theatre productions and highlights all major MU Student Union Ltd and UMSU cultural events on campus.

It has a print run of 1000per edition and and is circulated throughout the University via the 35 MU Student Union stands. The clubs and societies events are also listed on the homepage of the MU Student Union Ltd website which has in access of million hits per month.

Publication Dates

Eyeball is released weekly, Monday to Friday – every academic week of the year. Eyeball will not be published during the six-week mid-year break, during the non-instruction periods over Easter and in October or over the summer break between November and February.

Printing and Distribution 1000 copies of Eyeball are printed every Friday for the following week Monday to Friday. These are distributed in stands across campus.

Submissions for club listings

Submissions deadline for clubs is Wednesday 12pm for the following Monday-Friday edition

Eyeball only accepts online submissions. There are no special requirements and any student groups may be listed. The new publication is open to all activities, however it will primarily promote MU Student Union Ltd and UMSU services first and foremost and with space allowing other activities that directly support and service students interests.

Student Union Member/Affiliated Clubs and Societies

Student Union member/Affiliated clubs are welcome to submit their listings to Eyeball. However they will need to make sure that the information provided follows the guidelines set out by MU Student Union Ltd. The editor takes no responsibility for the double booking of rooms or food handling issues.

Other Student activities

Student planning activities on and off campus are welcome to submit information to Eyeball provided that they follow the advertising/editorial guidelines. The editor always has final discretion on the suitability of each submission and may edit them accordingly.

25 Words or Less
The electronic submission must be under 25 words long. In general, the editor of Eyeball can compress or change the wording of any notice at his or her discretion.

Listing Format
For consistency, to save space, and to ensure that (with the occasional exception) no group is given preferential treatment, notices in the new publications should be presented in a uniform style.

Student Christian Movement
Weekly meeting every Wednesday 12pm-2pm. Chaplaincy (786 Swanston Street). Lunch from 12pm and meeting/discussion from 1pm. Lunch at 12pm followed by branch planning meeting at 1pm. All interested people welcome..

Star Trek Club
Assimilation Day Wednesday 28 April, 1pm, Joe Nap B. Resistance is futile. Come dressed as your favourite doomed species and help the collective attain perfection. Borg designations and snack provided.

  • the club or organization’s name, and nothing else, appears in bold.
  • Melbourne University will be abbreviated to MU where applicable. If the club provides its own abbreviation (eg. CHAS, FOUL, WWWA etc) then these will be used.
  • if something within the notice needs to be stressed, then it should be italicised.
  • dates are: <day> <date> <month> <time>
  • the following will be abbreviated
    • ‘building’ – bldg
    • ‘floor’ – fl
    • ‘theatre’ – Th
    • ‘room’ – Rm
    • ‘Joe Napoliano Room’ – Joe Nap. Rm
    • ‘Undergraduate Room A’ – Undergrad. A

  • ‘Union House’ should always be referred to as the ‘Union Building’
  • Note also that several activities can be advertised within the one listing, eg. a trivia/quiz night, and the selling of tickets in the week before. It is preferable to head the listing with a simple word or statement describing the activity advertised (eg. ‘Meeting’ ‘Rally’), follow this with the fuller details provided on the Submission Form, the time and place of the activity, and, if applicable, a telephone number or place where students can get further information.
  • Full details of locations should be given where possible, including the room, the floor, and the building where the activity is to be held.
  • off campus locations should be accompanied by a street address and suburb.

Advertising in Eyeball

In each issue of Eyeball, there is space for advertising. These ad spaces are available for booking for free by MU Student Union Ltd and UMSU departments, including commercial services, Student Union Office Bearers and Committees for Campaigns, Theme Weeks and other relevant student events. External commercial ventures can advertise for a fee. Please contact the Promotions Officer for advertising rates.

Advertising inserts are only available to external commercial companies for a fee. Due to the demand on advertising space, it has become necessary to limit each advertisement to one issue a week. Should extra space become available, it will be filled at the discretion of the Eyeball editor. The issue required for the advertisement to appear can be requested at time of the booking. Every effort will be made to see that the advertisement appears on the day specified.
