Education (Public Affairs): Your Education, Your Voice!
The Education Public Affairs office has a proud and vibrant history of activism and standing up for the student voice. From the Vietnam moratoriums to campaigning against VSU, the Education office has always been proactive in progressive campaigns both on campus and around the country.
With a new government in power and all these promises for an “education revolution” it’s easy to forget that we still have a lot of work to do in fixing our higher education system. Our plans for this year include linking Melbourne University into a nationwide push for fully funded education across the country. The national “Demand A Better Future: Fund Our Education” campaign focuses around four pillars: “Scrap VSU, End Student Poverty, Abolish Full Fees, Decrease HECS.” With the national agenda for change so cluttered, it’s essential that everyone show their commitment to a fairer tertiary education system in Australia.
On campus, we’re looking to keep students informed of the many changes happening this year around the “Melbourne Model” we’ve all heard so much about. With entire degrees being scrapped and the remaining courses totally restructured, it’s a titanic task to keep track of the answers to all the important questions: What is it? What does it mean for me? What does it mean for my friends? What does it mean for equity and fairness in higher education? What does it mean for higher education more broadly? We hope to help you find out, and let the University know exactly how we all feel about the “Melbourne Model.”
The Education Collective meets on Wednesdays at 1pm, in Graham Cornish A, 2nd floor Union House.
