This is a first year Arts subject taken by the reviewer in as a January intensive subject, the only time it is available, in 2011.

Subject Outline. This subject is about how Nature was perceived throughout history. Nature has different definitions, it could mean the physical environment, or a mystical force outside the control of humans, or a temperament. Topics in this subject include Scientific revolution, enlightenment period, industrial revolution, Evolution, acclimatisation and empire, el nino, eugenics and holistic ecology thinking. It is a general crash-course at history with a theme of Nature.

Materials. There is a reader available in the bookshop in December. It was ~$60. These readings were also available online.

Assessment. Assessment was a presentation of one of the readings, a short essay and a long essay, and tutorial participation.

Lectures. Lectures were recorded on lectopia, and no notes were available before lecture. The lectures are enjoyable, and provide enough background material to aid your understanding of the readings.

Tutorials/Practicals. Tutorials have a 75% attendance hurdle. The tutorials require you to have read the readings to participate in class discussion. Michaela is a fantastic tutor.

The reviewer rated this subject 9/10.

Words of Wisdom. Do this subject. It is a summer intensive subject, but the workload is even, and the lectures are enjoyable. Do the readings, participate in tute discussion and you will do well.
