This is a third year Commerce subject taught in first semester and reviewed in 2011. This subject is loosely about statistics, but much less focused on typical regressions than Introductory Econometrics or Basic Econometrics. This subject is significantly more advanced. There is a large amount of matrix algebra, deriving equations and manipulating logarithms. The main content of the course is covered in the first four weeks, with applications and enrichment making up the rest of the semester.

There was a text book, but I don’t think very many people bought it. Any stats text book would be of value.

The assessment was made up of X5 2% mini-assignments, a 5% midsemester test, a 20% research paper, and a 65% exam. The assignments take a long time for what they are worth, but are very valuable in terms of learning the content. They aren’t too dificult, provided you have attended the tute immediately preceeding it, as the content is very similar. The research paper could be done in groups of up to 6, and the topic is completely up to you. Make sure to choose something that is easy to demonstrate course knowledge through. The midsem test was very easy and identical to the practice tests.

The lectures were recorded and screen-shot-ed. The lecturer is very entertaining and engaging. All of the lecture slides are available at the start of the semester, and very detailed.

Tutorial participation was not mandatory, but invaluable for completing the mini-assignments. Also, any practice with the computer program EViews helps a lot for the research paper.
