This is a second year Commerce subject taken by the reviewer in second semester 2010.
Subject Outline. The subject covered valuation of many different securities, debt and bonds, such as ordinary shares, preferential shares, options for use in hedging and speculating, and bank accepted bills. It built directly on the first year subject Finance 1, but previous knowledge from this subject is not strictly necessary. However the only way to do this subject without having done Finance 1 is to have done both a quantitative subject and an accounting subject.
Materials. There is a fairly expensive textbook but you can get by without it. The reviewer didn’t buy the textbook because the lecture slides were very detailed and easy to learn from. If you did value extra reading, then buy the textbook. Shouldn’t have too much trouble finding it second hand.
Assessment. The assessments were relatively straight forward. The two assignments were multiple choice and the questions were given out in advance to when they were due. They were entered in the FAT system. The midsemester exam was a bit more difficult, but also multiple choice. Do the practice midsemester exams, and use the tutorial sheets to study for the final exam.
Lectures. Lectures were recorded and notes were made available before the lectures began. The theatres weren’t always adequate in terms of space. Lecturer was available outside of class hours for help.
Tutorials/Practicals. Tutorial questions are very useful for learning the kinds of questions you will be asked on assessments. Good practice. Attendance is not recorded generally but you should go anyway.
The reviewer rated this subject 9/10.
