Chinese Publishers’ Group
The Chinese Publishers’ Group (CPG) represents a group of students with Chinese backgrounds and who are interested in the Chinese literature and cultures. The purpose of this club is to motivate the members to co-operate and to participate in the executive works, editorial tasks, funding searches and also to improvise marketing jobs to obtain better outcomes.
In addition, CPG publishes its own magazine called `Qing Niao’ which has three issues in a year. The magazine can help to develop the reading interests and to improve the writing skills among the students. CPG is now becoming a multimedia group, besides publishing articles. In the near future, CPG is going to organize more multimedia competitions such as website designs, poster designs and photography skills competitions. Interested participants can get to know more about CPG.
Currently, CPG is undergoing a broadcasting training program with SYN FM, a radio organization from RMIT. The programs will present multicultural music and other related topics. With this new activity, CPG hopes to attract more members with more ideas, more contributions and more participation.

Chocolate Lovers’ Society
The Chocolate Lover’s Society has been dedicated to the goals of chocolate to the masses, supreme gastronomical indulgence and dodgy record-keeping for, oh, well, a really long time. With so many members, we have at least one excuse for being thrown off-track. We have just purchased 30kg of really, really good quality chocolate and we need your help to eat the lot.
To find out more, please email us at chocolatelovers@gmail.com, drop us a line at Box 21 on the first floor of Union House (past the co-op, keep going, on your left) or visit our embryonic website at http://files.keeghan.com.au/ChocLoversSociety/main.html.
And remember the 12-step plan for dealing with chocolate addiction; never be further than 12 steps away from chocolate!

Cosmic Hitchhikers Appreciation Society (C.H.A.S.)
CHAS, founded in 1983 by a group of well-meaning psychotic individuals, is a club (as you might’ve guessed, since you’re on UMSU’s Clubs and Societies page) that thoroughly appreciates all things Cosmic Hitchhikers, Douglas Adams, and anything to do with the number 42. But we do more! (No, we won’t sell you steak knives…unless you’re really nice). We also appreciate, amongst other things Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, Terry Pratchett, assorted British comedians, BBC Telefantasy, and any other being or concept we happen to find strangely amusing. We are a fairly active club, and we have groovy t-shirts. We also have a discount card, and some of the committee members are nice. Some also have fungus growing on their feet, but that is another matter. We also have excursions to study the effects of certain colourless volatile liquids, and their intoxicating effects on carbon-based life forms, probably while saying “zootlewurdle, zootlewurdle, zootlewurdle” quite a bit. Also, we like to prove that being dead is not compulsory, that fart jokes are a real gas and that the round table wasn’t. We also tend to have the occasional BBQ while stomping around in dressing-gowns and slippers, also while shouting “zootlewurdle, zootlewurdle, zootlewurdle”. Our website, for those technologically advanced (which one may assume, since you found your way here) is www.cosmichitchhikers.com.

Debating Society
Melbourne University Debating Society (MUDS), unsurprisingly, is a group dedicated to organising and participating in debates. We organise competitions within the university, in a variety of different debating styles and where a wide range of issues are covered. MUDS also organises competitions and activities with other universities, such as Monash and Deakin. There are also a few major intervarsity tournaments that MUDS participates in each year, including the Australian Championships, the Australasian Championships and the World Championships. This gives our members a chance to meet (and debate against) students from across the world and our local region, as well as providing a great excuse to travel (and sometimes we even get sponsorship to help pay for that travel!).
Of course MUDS doesn’t only do debating. We also provide lots of training in different debating styles and general public speaking skills, as well as providing information forums about topical issues. We also have lots of social events throughout the year, including an annual dinner, a trivia night, commencement dinner, a public debate and many other events.

Food Interest Group (FIG)
Do you love food? Are you interested in eating? Are you human?
If you answered yes to at least one question above then food is essential to you. Therefore Food Interest Group is essential to you.
FIG promotes healthy eating, both physically and mentally. Which means not looking at nutrition information obsessively but eating like a pro. It also means that we support the occasional food therapy eg. ingesting two whole pizzas following a tub of icecream. As long as you can handle it, we will provide such opportunities. After all eating is what uni life is all about. You will have the chance to cook and eat, whichever you fancy more.
So join us and we might sit down and imagine things about food and beyond. You know you want to.
p.s. We bribed student union officials with a chocolate mars bars cake from David Jones in order to get this published. So join us!

Friends of Unnatural Llamas (FOUL)
Friends of Unnatural Llamas (FOUL) are the silliest club at Melbourne University. It is also one of the most active, with weekly social functions and the occasional camp or two. Although we haven’t had a camp recently. Shhh, you’re wrecking it. And we missed last week’s function. Last week was a holiday. Was it? That explains why I was the only one at class. Stop it. Stop it. We don’t have time for your prattle — This is about FOUL. Well, you’re not doing it right. Nobody wants to hear about your stupid Monty Python Club. Shut up. No, you shut up. No — YOU shut up. You’re so childish. Grow up. Drop dead.

Juggling Club
Juggling Club has been hanging around Melbourne University since about 1998. We meet on Thursdays, 52 weeks a year, for a few hours from about 4:30pm until we’re cold/tired/hungry under the sails in North Court. During semester, we also meet on Mondays at around 1pm on the Concrete Lawns (east side of Union House).
You don’t need to know how to juggle to join the Juggling Club, just turn up and someone will be able to help teach you. Members practise ball, club and contact juggling, and we also dabble in unicycling, poi, staff, mini-biking, diabolo, acrobalance and more, so if there’s something else you’re interested in learning, just ask around. The Juggling Club is also a great place for people who already do circus stuff to come play or work on serious skills, and share the joy with each other.
As well as hanging out and doing some juggling, we regularly hold pizza nights, barbecues, a camp each semester, workshops, a juggling club ball and the new annual ice-creamery crawl. Juggling Club – It’s all about the love and/or safety!

Political Interest Society
If you’re interested in politics and current affairs, the Political Interest Society is the club for you. Founded in 1998, PIS is a non-partisan discussion group; the club’s motto is ‘Audi Alteram Partem’, which is Latin for ‘Hear Both Sides’. We promote balanced and informed discussion on contemporary issues, and welcome people regardless of their political persuasions.
Our weekly meetings provide a relaxed atmosphere in which to chat with other people interested in domestic and international affairs, with biscuits provided for free. Come along to have your say about what’s going on in the world, or to find out what’s going on. It’s a great chance to learn since whatever the issue under discussion may be, someone at the meeting will know all about it.
PIS runs a blog and puts out a biannual print magazine (AAP) and a weekly e-newsletter. We have an active social calendar that includes a trivia night, comedy festival outing and guest speaker events. Membership is free for union members or $2 for non-members.

Secular Society
Are you an INFIDEL and proud of it? Are you tired of your rights being overstepped in deference to other people’s irrational beliefs? Do you find religious beliefs and practices fascinating, confusing, or disturbing? If so, then the University of Melbourne Secular Society is the club for you!
UMSS provides a social group for students looking for an alternative to the religious clubs on campus. We prefer reason to prejudice, science to superstition, evidence to faith, and promote secular ethics and education. Besides standard club activities (BBQs, screenings, pub visits, etc) we hold discussions, attend presentations, and encourage debate on matters of secularism, humanism, atheism and rationalism.

Students Playing Go
Students Playing Go Club have the main focus on playing the game of Go which is an ancient oriental game of strategy where two players take turns to place black and white stones on the board, fighting to take more territory than the opponent. The rules are simple and can be learnt in a few minutes; however, it is said to take a lifetime to
master.
Go is the second most played game in the world, after Chinese Chess, and is an excellent way to develop both logical and creative abilities, as it exercises both sides of the brain. Students Playing Go club meets weekly to play, teach, discuss and enjoy this wonderful game. Players of all levels, including absolute beginners are always welcome to come and take part, and due to a simple and effective handicapping system, can even challenge more experienced players on level terms.
Go is a game of balance, which, some believe, reflects the personality of the player. We hope all students will come along and learn more about this great game, as well as themselves. The day and location of our weekly meetings can be found on our website. If you have any other enquiries please email us.
