Chemical Engineering Students Society

Melbourne University Chemical Engineering Students Society (MUCESS) was founded in 1960 to help establish a feeling of belonging for the Chemical Engineers at that time. Since then MUCESS has helped preserve a Chemical Engineering stream at Melbourne Uni after some calls to have it disbanded. The course now on offer is considered one of the best in the world after a recent grading by external sources. Every Chemical Engineer at Melbourne automatically becomes a member of MUCESS. The Society now plays an active role in bringing industry representatives to numerous functions over the year for the benefit of its members. Other events such as barbeques, football matches, a trivia night, car rally and a Chemical Engineering Dinner are run throughout the year. MUCESS is intimately involved with the development of the Chemical Engineering course structure, and is a very important tool for student input. It is also an excellent way for students who might consider running for positions in future to help develop essential skills before entering industry.

Environmental Engineering Students Society

The Environmental Engineering Students Society (EESS) is committed to enhancing university life for all environmental engineering students on campus. The primary focus of the EESS is the organization of social and educational events encouraging greater interaction between students of all year levels and providing information relevant to the study and practice of environmental engineering.

All environmental engineering students at the University of Melbourne are automatic members of the EESS. Post-graduate students and departmental staff involved in research within the department are considered associate members of the society.

The EESS executive committee consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Education Officer. The general committee includes fourth year, third year and second year and general representatives. In addition, the EESS committee seeks to garner ideas and opinions from all our members, and any student wishing to attend a meeting is more than welcome.

Activities organised by the EESS in previous years include BBQs, pub nights, trivia nights, inter-departmental sports games (male & female), work experience seminars, industry nights and the famous EESS Cocktail Party.

The committee would like to welcome you and all environmental engineering students, and encourages all to get involved. See you at the next event!

— Your friendly EESS committee.

Environments Student Society (Envi.)

Out of the diverging plate tectonic movements that reshaped the University of Melbourne and designed the system that is the Bachelor of Environments, emerged a new breed of students. Theses students, often mistaken for their tree hugging hippy forefathers protested with true Green Peace enthusiasm to have naming rights to at least something within the university. As a result Envi was born. Envi’s followers have successfully colonised levels 2, 3 and 4 of the halls of the architecture building with a unique spirit and attitude that no shear force can break.
Envi provides many social events such as BBQ’s, Envi ball and Camp and other random activities to stimulate our environmental amusement for all students of the Bachelor of Environments no matter what their individual major may be.
It’s totally envi.ess…

German Club

The Melbourne University German Club is a departmental club, meaning all
students enrolled in German at the University should become members. The club also heartily welcomes students from German-speaking backgrounds, and anyone else interested in speaking German, or just finding out more about the culture of German speaking people. The German Club has year level representatives to represent its members, as well as an Executive consisting of a President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Education Officer.

The Club serves a manifold purpose. On one level, the German Club promotes the German culture and language throughout the University. On another level, through a number of social events, it gives students of German the opportunity to socialise and speak German in casual surroundings. This is facilitated through fortnightly “Kaffee und Kuchen” (coffee and cakes), a regular “Stammtisch” at Corkman’s Irish Pub, and German Film viewing, as well as other seasonal events. The Club also supports and promotes the “Germanic Players” theatre group, which performs German-language productions.

Japanese Club

The Melbourne University Japanese Club (MUJC), affiliated with and supported by the Student Union and housed at the Asia Institute, is a club for students of the University studying the Japanese language or culture and members of the university community who have an interest in Japan! We hold a variety of social and cultural activities throughout the year.

Our events are friendly and relaxed, and our main goal is for members to enjoy themselves (without spending too much!) We provide opportunities for members to interact with others sharing an interest in Japan, to further their understanding of the Japanese language and culture, and to have FUN! For example, Kaiwa Saakuru (or weekly Conversation Sessions), held in a classroom in the Sidney Myer Asia Centre, allows students to practise their Japanese or English speaking skills in a friendly and casual environment (whatever their language abilities!) with nibblies/drinks provided.

For the more creative-minded, the club also organises cultural demonstrations and workshops for students to participate in, such as Ikebana, manga drawing, envelope making and calligraphy. Outside of the University, club members are also invited to join in with our karaoke, movie and bowling nights.

Another excellent way to draw together people with a common interest in Japan, its language and its culture, is with food! We’ve participated in the biggest multicultural event on campus, the MUOSS Festival of Nations, to bring you Japanese culinary delights such as okonomiyaki, miso soup and yakisoba. Sometimes we’d prefer it if we didn’t have to cook/cater for ourselves, which is why we love to chill out at BBQs and lunches and ‘nomikais’ with visiting Japanese exchange students.

We also like to go out to Japanese restaurants in particular, guests at our annual Rakuen banquet dinner are treated to an exquisite meal at one of Melbourne’s finest Japanese restaurants with relaxed drinks afterwards. You don’t have to be a student studying Japanese – anyone is welcome to join! To become a member, simply check out the ‘Want to join the club?’

Science Students Society

We’re about meeting new people, making friends, and getting the most out of your time here at uni…

The Science Students’ Society (SSS) is a non-profit organisation, run by a committee of current Melbourne University students. Our member-base consists of over 3000 undergraduate, post-graduate and past students, with over 1000 new members signed-up this year! Membership is open to anyone here at uni!

The SSS runs off revenue generated by its own events. It continues to run successfully, but ALL money raised throughout the year is spent solely on future SSS services and events. Our aim is to create a light-hearted supportive yet entertaining environment, in which we can provide helpful and informative student services, discounts to members, and study relief in the form of many popular events. The SSS strongly encourages participation in the social aspect of Melbourne Uni life…
Our main events include: Orientation Camp, open to around 250 first year students of any course, every year!. End of Exams Parties are held at the end of each exam period and attract up to 2000 members! Science Ball is the biggest event on the SSS calendar and by far the largest faculty ball at Melbourne University. This themed sell-out event has consistently attracted up to 1500 people, as well as local bands and entertainers.

FREE BBQs are held fortnightly, and also on days before a university break. All our members receive a membership card which entitles them to these freebies, and other great discounts!
