“Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem, a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist techniques and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement, which can be . described in a very simple term – selectivity.”

- Berenice Abbott – in “Infinity” magazine, 1951.

Framed is the annual photography competition of the Arts Department of the Student Union. With help from student club, fotoholics, the Arts Officers (Ella and Maddie) have been furiously planning this exciting event for all student photographers.

So, why a photography competition? The Arts Department believes in making these events open to the widest range of students and we believe photography is a fun and accessible way of showing your own individual view.

The theme this year is “Meet me here” which is a theme that explores how and why communities, ideas and people come together. What are the reasons people gather together? In what way do they meet and relate, how does my idea meet yours?

Years spent at university are generally times of change and development, even more so for students at this University over the past few years. The implementation of the Melbourne Model has brought about subject cuts and an entirely new curriculum, while the crippling effects of VSU has changed the nature of life on campus. In times of change it is important to reflect on our environment, to think about who we are and what we want for the future.

So, using your camera you can question yourself, question those around you, and produce a photograph that might be a bold statement or a simple expression, a record of how and why we meet here.
