If you carelessly use another person’s work in an essay or assignment without proper acknowledgment you may have committed academic misconduct. For example, when taking notes from a book you might copy a chunk of text and omit the quotation marks, and then later type the notes into your essay without noticing that the words are exactly the same as in the original source. Even if it is not deliberate, it can still get you into trouble. The Advocacy Service has supported a number of students recently who have been called to account for plagiarism. If this happens to you, please come and see an advisor at the service.
